the three doshas
In Ayurveda, the five elements combine in pairs to form three dynamic forces called the doshas. The doshas govern all functions in our being and their dynamism is what makes life happen. They are commonly referred to as mind/body types because we are each made up of a unique blend of the three. Vata governs all movement, pitta governs digestion and metabolism and kapha governs structure and lubrication. Below you will find the pair of elements each dosha is made up of and some general characteristics to help you identify how they work in your body and in your personality.
VATA // air + ether
Think of wind— cold, light, dry and irregular. Vata governs movement in the body like absorption of nutrients, circulation, excretion, nerve impulses, thoughts and prana, or life force of the body. A vata body type may be very tall or very short with a small frame, protruding bones, oblong face with thin/small features and their body temperature runs a little cold. Vatas are independent, they have tendencies towards excitement and creativity but when aggravated experience anxiety and insomnia.
PITTA // fire + water
Think of fire— hot, light, sharp and mobile. Pitta governs digestion of food and impressions, enzymatic and hormonal activities, pigmentation, body temperature, hunger, thirst and sight. A pitta body type usually has a medium frame with a more athletic build, angular face with moderate features and can run a little warm. Pittas make great leaders, they have tendencies towards passion and determination but when aggravated may be intense and experience anger.
KAPHA // water + earth
Think of water, earth— cool, heavy, stable and wet. Kapha governs the structure and stability of the body, it lubricates joints, provides moisture to the skin, heals wounds and regulates vata and pitta. A kapha body has a well developed, sturdy frame, round face with large features and is not much affected by running too warm or cold. Kaphas are great supporters, they have tendencies towards being very nurturing and stable but when aggravated may be overly attached and stubborn.
